Setup and First Session

Before Joining

  1. Read the server rules and the network rules.
  2. Install the official Apocalypse modpack. Prism Launcher is recommended; the Modrinth App also works. CurseForge is not recommended due to shady practices.
  3. Use JDK 21 and allocate at least 6 GB of memory to Minecraft. Do not assign all available system memory to Minecraft.
    • 4 GB is the absolute minimum.
    • 8 GB is the recommended amount.
  4. If needed, use these JVM arguments:
    -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:G1NewSizePercent=20 -XX:G1ReservePercent=20 -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50 -XX:G1HeapRegionSize=32M
  5. Use the Minecraft and Forge versions required by the pack. Do not update individual mods or add client mods without checking with staff first.
  6. Start the pack once from the launcher so required files and configs finish installing before you attempt to connect.

Do not download the entries in the mod list one by one. The list is a reference, not an installation guide. The server pack includes required versions, dependencies, resource files, and configuration that manual installs can miss.

First Launch

Before joining the server, open the controls and audio settings:

  • Bind a key for push-to-talk or voice activation, then test your microphone.
  • Make sure hostile-mob and player sound effects are audible.
  • Check that your render distance and graphics settings are comfortable before going on an expedition.
  • Keep the recipe viewer enabled. It is the fastest way to learn the pack's current recipes and machine inputs.
  • Although it is recommended to keep them turned on, you can turn off shaders to improve performance.

If the game crashes, capture the crash message or log rather than repeatedly relaunching. Include the launcher version, Minecraft version, Forge version, and the action that caused the crash when asking staff for help.

Connecting

Use the server address supplied by the AlterraHQ staff. If the server rejects the connection:

  • Confirm that the launcher selected the Apocalypse instance rather than vanilla Minecraft or another pack.
  • Confirm that the pack finished updating and that you did not change or remove its files.
  • Restart the launcher and try again once.
  • Check the known issues page.
  • Contact staff with the exact error message if the problem continues.

Your First Few Minutes

The spawn area protects players from hostile mob spawns while they join, but it is not a permanent safe zone. After spawning, do not immediately travel into an unknown city. Establish a small routine:

  • Your top priority should be getting leather, and wool at the minimum.
    • For a backpack, you will also need planks, and string.
      • String can be crafted from cloth found in cities.
  • Looking for cities is a great way to get materials like guns and food.
    • If you follow the underwater pipeline, you should be able to find one.
  • Craft lighting, torches are temporary but lanterns last longer.
    • You will need flint and iron to craft the lantern.
  • Establish a temporary shelter in an already built up building.
  • Do not make much sound as zombies can hear and break blocks.

Continue with the quick tips before attempting a long expedition.

Read the threat progression guide before deciding how long to stay outside or when to invest in stronger equipment.
